After 33 years spent in public service, I have just about seen it all. From the best leaders to the worse, great bosses and those bosses most of us have had—you know, the boss who couldn’t organize a one car funeral without guidance but thinks they could put on the Indy 500 all by themselves. I have also experienced my share of personal challenges such as heart breaks and disappointments, debilitating social anxiety, health concerns and beliefs of not being good enough and not being worthy of love and belonging. What I call damaged goods. Through coaching I found that these are the voices of Dementors—you know of the Harry Potter stories—those black ghosts who suck all the happiness and joy from a person. And while I can choose to go sit with the Dementors, I know it’s a choice. Some amazing coaches taught me that. And that is the reason I became a professionally trained and certified personal life and career coach in 2017.
Through my own life and coaching experiences, I have come to believe we are all on a journey to become our best selves, yet along the way we have such experiences as adversity, doubts, conflict, and disconnection to name a few—each of which can block our path. I believe coaching, whether personal or for the leader looking at his career, is all about intentional development to become the person and/or leader one is meant to be.
I also believe strongly in the power of story, no matter our circumstances, we each are the author of our life’s story.
